Lung Cancer Facts

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer. It kills nearly twice as many women as breast cancer, and more than three times as many men as prostate cancer. Lung cancer takes more lives than breast, colon, prostate, liver and kidney cancer COMBINED.
While smoking is the number one risk factor for developing lung cancer, half of all new diagnoses are in former smokers. It is also important to note that between 10% and 15% of those diagnosed have never smoked.
There are many obvious health benefits to quitting smoking, however, former smokers are still at an elevated risk for developing lung cancer for many years after they have quit.
Although there is currently no approved screening method for the early detection of lung cancer, preliminary research shows promising results for using CT scans to screen for lung cancer. If you are at risk, talk with your doctor about the benefi ts and risks of screening options that may be available to you.
